Docking Seminar
All About Docking
The Docking Seminar is a specialised practical training programme for sailors who want to improve one of the most important and demanding parts of boat handling: docking safely, calmly, and with control.
Docking requires a clear understanding of how a vessel behaves at low speed. Rudder response, propeller effect, wind, momentum, available space, lines, fenders, and crew coordination all play a critical role in every manoeuvre.
Through practical training in real conditions, participants gain the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on experience needed to approach, berth, moor, and depart safely in different harbour and marina situations.
Seminar Objective
The goal of the seminar is to help participants understand the key principles of docking and develop practical skills for safe and confident manoeuvring.
Training focuses on vessel control under engine, rudder and propeller influence, wind effect, stern-to and side-to berthing, docking with anchor, mooring alongside other vessels, crew organisation, and decision-making in real docking conditions.
Day by Day
Docking Fundamentals
On the first day, participants focus on the basic principles that affect every docking manoeuvre.
You will learn how a vessel behaves at low speed, how rudder and propeller influence control, and why wind, space, preparation, and communication play such an important role before and during each approach.
Training topics include:
- Basic docking principles
- Low-speed vessel handling
- Rudder and propeller influence
- Windage and how it affects manoeuvring
- Preparation before docking
- Crew organisation before manoeuvres
- Safety checks before approach and departure
